  • Grand jury resister Maddy Pfeiffer has been released, according to the Seattle Stranger. Pfeiffer was one of four Pacific Northwest anarchists imprisoned for refusing to implicate others at a grand jury believed to be investigating property destruction in Seattle last May Day. There are no other details, at present, as to the conditions under which Pfeiffer was released. Fellow co-resisters Matt Duran and Katherine “Kteeo” Olejnik were released in February.
  • The Portland cop who fired live shotgun rounds at a man suffering a mental health crisis is being sued in federal court. Officer Dane Reister fired live shotgun rounds which he said he mistook for “less-lethal” beanbag rounds at William Kyle Monroe, who had been acting erratically, in June of 2011. Monroe, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, barely escaped with his life; he was shot on the south waterfront and nearly bled to death, but he was near OHSU, where he was rushed once shot. Monroe is seeking $11 million in damages and Reister’s termination.
  • In other porcine news, Trimet says that it will post plainclothes officers to catch fare evaders and “unruly” riders.
  • Someone mailed a bomb to truly awful human being and Maricopa County, Ariz. sheriff Joe Arpaio. It was discovered and defused.
  • The Portland FBI is starting a trivia contest to promote its Twitter account. This is not a joke. They are actually doing this.
  • Human rights observers in Syria say that government forces shot and shelled the town of Sanamayn, between Damascus and Daraa, Wednesday, killing an estimated 150 people.
  • Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi promotes three generals, days after a report of leaked Egyptian documents revealed the military was involved in killing, torture and disappearances during the 2011 revolution.
  • Afghan insurgents today killed 13 soldiers in the Narai district of Kunar province, near Pakistan, overrunning a military installation with heavy arms fire.
  • After a concerted effort to land “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead” from “The Wizard of Oz” in the British charts, thus placing it on the BBC’s chart-countdown show and getting a wicked burn on dead Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the BBC says it will play part of the song, with an explanation as to why.
  • A beaver fatally attacked a fisherman in Belarus. Everyone listen: they have really sharp teeth. Don’t try to get near them, please.  Enjoy them from afar.
